Just because we are in Northern Thailand doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy a good hamburger. And we surprisingly have options here. From meaty beef burgers from food trucks to bacon cheeseburgers to vegan patties, there is a sandwich here for anyone. Here are my five favorite places to grab a burger.
THE FOOD TRUCK
I’ll admit, being from Austin, Texas, I’m a sucker for any meal that comes out of a food truck. This corner spot is walking distance from the clocktower, behind the hotel sign. They serve burgers, fries, onion rings, and cold beers. The burgers are not too greasy as they tease you from a wood platter. The meat is the just the right amount of pink, the bread is soft, and fries, although few compared to American standards, are delicious. Everything tastes fresh and your belly will be happy when the meal is over.
THE VEGGIE SECRET FROM A CAFE
Yoddoi Coffee & Tea
Don’t like to eat meat? Don’t worry. Yoddoi Coffee & Tea serves more than just coffee and tea. They grill up some mean meat, as well as veggie burgers. I actually really love veggie burgers, and these are some the best I’ve tasted, period. Yoddoi offers a plain flavor, but I opted for the yellow curry flavor. It was soft, fresh, and made my body feel good. This is an absolute must try, regardless if you live in Chiang Rai or if you are just visiting.
THE AMERICAN STYLE PUB
Hungry Wolf is reviewed consistently as having great burgers (and pizzas) in Chiang Rai. They serve large portions, as us Westerners are used to. Try the beef, bacon, sausage, chicken, or fish burgers from this relaxed restaurant near the Night Market. I thoroughly enjoyed the Brick House, a monster of a burger with a beef patty, pulled baby back rib in sauce, lettuce, onion and pineapple. (If you don’t want a burger, they also have pizzas, huge salads, and other meat dishes.)
THE CAFE SPECIAL
Cafe de MOW
Cafe de MOW is a beautiful, modern bakery and cafe that has a fairly full menu. On that menu: pork, bacon, and beef cheeseburgers. The buns are whole wheat and flat, but I really enjoyed that. The beef patty was large and juicy. It was a little heavy on mayo, but the flavors combined was delicious. Plus, the french fries were very tasty.
THE MOD SHOP WITH THE FRESHEST BUNS
If you want a simply delicious burger, go to The Factory. It tastes fresh – not too greasy – with hand shaped patties made from quality beef. The highlight of this burger is the bun, made fresh by a local baker named Dudley (who also has amazing pies). Enjoy listening to some American and British classics while chowing down on this tasty burger in this hip spot.
