A group of friends and I were craving some sushi, so we headed over to Umami. It is a charming little Japanese restaurant in North Chiang Rai. With both an inside and outside sitting areas, we were ready to try Umami’s fresh fish.
With Thai and Western friends in tow, we ordered seaweed salad, salmon rolls, and a chicken teriyaki bowl. Everything we had was delicious. The seaweed salad was a real winner. The salmon rolls were very fresh and soft. The chicken teriyaki bowl was very flavorful. Nearly all neighbors around us had hot pots and sizzling meats. Although we did not try it, it looked and smelled delicious.
We all liked it so much, we ordered a second round of everything.
At the end of the evening, we got ice cream – strawberry and bean flavored. Everyone approved.
One friend was a vegetarian, and we had a little difficulty finding him a lot of options. He was able to eat the seaweed salad (though it had fish eggs on top), cucumber sushi rolls and egg sushi rolls. Needless to say, he was full by the end of the evening.
The service, to be honest, was a little slow. It was a busy night, but it took a while to get our drinks and they forgot one of our orders. But they were all friendly and professional.
The meal for four very full people was under 1,500 baht, which included 6 plates of sushi, 4 bowls of salad, 2 teriyaki bowls and ice cream. Overall, we were very satisfied with our meal and will head back one day soon!
